Sonny with a Chance

Good, with a catch

Ages 7–13First shown 2009

Sonny Munroe makes the leap from the Midwest to Los Angeles to join the cast of "So Random!," the most popular sketch comedy TV show for kids and tweens. Her fellow young actors are resident teen queen Tawni, super suave Nico, gregarious funnyman Grady and quirky Zora. Now Sonny must somehow balance these new friendships while adjusting to her family's decidedly different way of life in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Sonny must also contend with heartthrob Chad Dylan Cooper, star of the rival show "MacKenzie Falls," who makes it known that he thinks his dramatic work is better than her comedy career.

Overstimulating Not toy-led Grating audio: mixed views

Reviewers generally view the series as a bright and energetic sitcom that succeeds thanks to a strong lead performance and a creative format that parodies the entertainment industry. While the protagonist serves as an excellent role model for persistence and kindness, the show is frequently noted for its loud, hyperactive tone and occasionally mean-spirited supporting characters. Parents are divided on its humor, with some finding the satire clever and others dismissed it as loud and repetitive.

Why these scores

Good influence

Does it show behaviour you'd be happy to see copied?

4out of 5

The central character is widely praised as a hardworking, sensible, and kind leader who resolves conflicts through empathy and stays true to her values. While many supporting characters begin as self-centered, narcissistic, or mean-spirited archetypes, several undergo redemption arcs and develop genuine loyalties. However, some reviews highlight recurring issues with bullying, cheating, and inappropriate jokes that can undercut the positive messages.

Parent appeal

Will you enjoy watching it with them?

3out of 5

Opinions are sharply divided: many parents and critics enjoy the show's witty satire of teen fame and its 'show-within-a-show' format, finding it more refreshing than typical tween sitcoms. Conversely, a significant number of adults find the experience tedious or even unbearable, citing a reliance on slapstick, potty humor, and repetitive juvenile tropes. It is generally considered tolerable for a family watch, but rarely a first choice for adults on their own.

Well made

Are the writing, animation and sound made with care?

4out of 5

The production is noted for its high technical quality, being a pioneer in high-definition broadcasting for its network, and featuring creative set designs. The lead actress and ensemble are frequently lauded for their comedic timing and energy, though some viewers find the acting style to be overly exaggerated and 'hyperactive'. While the 'show-within-a-show' concept is praised for its innovation, the writing is occasionally criticized for being formulaic or lacking depth.

Watch-outs

Overstimulating

Multiple reviews describe the show's visual style as having an 'eye-popping' or 'violent' amount of color, paired with a cast that is frequently noted for constant shouting and high-energy yacking.

Not toy-led

Reviewers specifically highlight that the series feels less commercial than its peers and appears to stand on its own creative merit rather than being designed to sell merchandise.

Grating audio: mixed views

There is a conflict between viewers who find the theme song very catchy and those who are irritated by constant screaming, screeching, and a grating laugh track. Because multiple sites provide strong evidence for both the quality of the music and the annoying nature of the dialogue/effects, the consensus is mixed.
